The Gridiron guys out of Northwestern may not have a team motto, but one thing the Tigers can agree upon is that the key to success this season is playing with intensity. That intensity starts at the top with Head Coach Jovin Kroll.

"A lot of intensity. He get us fired up for practice and for games," said senior fullback and inside linebacker Andrew Hanson.

"He brings a lot of energy," added senior quarterback and safety Kade Bartelt. "He has some pretty high goals and we're working every day to achieve them."

In just his first year at the helm of the program, Coach Kroll describes his coaching style as bringing a fiery personality into a game of emotion. He won't be the only new addition to this year's squad. Returning just two to three seniors on both sides of the ball, with a few starts under his belt Bartelt will start his first year at quarterback.

"Kade's the leader of this football team," said Kroll. "He's got a little bit of experience, but he's point guard on the basketball team. That transfers over great to the football field. He throws a good ball, can run a little bit, and he's a good leader," he added.

Leadership from the handful of seniors will be something coach says they need to establish to keep the younger guys intensity levels up. It will be especially important as the team opens up to one of their biggest rivals Ashland in the 'Highway 2 Battle.'

"It's going to be a grinded out game. It's always a close game, good game, and first game of the season. I'm looking forward to it," said Hanson.

"It was always kind of an important game for us because they were always the big dogs. They're a bigger school than us, so to be able to have the success we've had in the past few years has been nice, but we know they are gunning for us and we need to be ready to go if we expect to continue winning in that rivalry," said Kroll.

Northwestern will face Ashland Friday, August 18. Game time is set for 7:00 P.M.
