Northland golf teams prepare for the state stage

As the Minnesota State golf tournament draws near, Northland teams put in their final swings before performing on the state stage.

For Rock Ridge girls’ golf, the team secured their spot in the state tournament for the third year in a row.

“I would be lying if I said it wasn’t to make a dent there down at State, not just be satisfied getting there, but hopefully put together two days of great scores that we can be proud of and represent Rock Ridge,” said head coach Kyle Lawrence.

Teammates Madison Fingeroos and Erin Hughes have made state berths before, but this year is made extra special by how close the team has become.

“I’ve really had a lot of fun over the years. I don’t know. I was really super like my seventh grade. I was super excited during the team and now it’s just each year I get more excited once I once I know the winter zone season starting and even though we start on simulators, I think I think it still helps,” said Fingeroos.

No matter how many times they make it as a team down to the state tournament, the excitement remains the same.

“I think we’re all really excited as a team. You know, we worked really hard to get here and we just want to do like better as we continue and finish our season strong down at state,” said Hughes.

Cloquet boy’s golf is also no stranger to the Minnesota state golf tournament, as they will be returning for the seventh year in a row.

“I mean, we’ve been really lucky for seven straight years now to bring a team to state and it’s all been because of the depth of the program where we have four to six players that we can suit up and can all shoot good scores, which makes it hard to compete against teams that have two or three,” said head coach Aaron Young.

Teammate Lance Sayler says the team’s continual depth can be credited to their success.

“We have four returning seniors, our experience at state, two up and coming freshmen. I mean, we’re, I think we have better depth than most teams. We’ve always have been since 2018. So I think a good experience is what makes us good,” said Sayler.

The boys’ and girls’ state golf tournaments begin on Tuesday, June 10th and run through Wednesday, June 11th.
