Seven starters are back from the defensive unit that allowed the fewest overall yards (205.7 per game) and fewest rushing yards (59.2 per game) in all of NCAA Division II last year. In addition, UMD lead the country in third down conversion defense (.225) and finished second in pass efficiency defense (93.25), time of possession (35:13) and kickoff return defense (12.92 yards per return). They were also third in scoring defense (12.4 points per game) and fifth in passing defense (146.5 yards per game). The Bulldogs went 11-0 in the regular season and reached the NCAA Division II Tournament.

"Having the experience with it and being able to tell the younger guys kind of okay if you get this lineup or if you get this formation this is what you're going to get out of this so not only helping myself with that from the experience but helping the younger guys," says junior safety Bill Atkins.

The Bulldogs open in three weeks on September 5th at home vs Minot State.
