The Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) Board of Directors voted Thursday morning for a "maximized winter season" that consists of a 30% reduction in contests.

The "maximized winter season" limits each team to playing two contests a week and conference, section and local teams only. Teams will be allowed to play three contests in the final two weeks of the regular season to allow for COVID-19 make ups.

Here's a look at the winter sports start dates:

Nov. 9 - Dance (15-week schedule with 11 contests)

Nov. 16 - Adapted floor hockey (16-week schedule with 18 contests)

Nov. 23 -

  • Boys basketball (17-week schedule with 18 contests)

  • Girls hockey (16-week schedule with 18 contests)
  • Nordic and alpine ski (14-week schedule with 11 contests)
  • Wrestling (14-week schedule with 16*/32 contests)
    • *Dates not reduced, to allow for tri/dual and 30% matches reduction

Dec. 7-

  • Gymnastics (14-week schedule with 11 contests)
  • Girls basketball (17-week schedule with 18 contests)

The MSHSL has not yet discussed state tournaments, specifically, for winter sports.
