After going 7-3 last season the Mesabi East football team is off to an early start, preparing for a zero-week match with Rush City August 23. Their week one matchup fell through, providing them an opportunity to start practice a week ahead of the rest of Minnesota teams.

While the Giants are only returning six seniors, their core veteran squad said they're optimistic for the new season with a fresh, young team.

"We're anxious to start the season and so our guys are pumped up, they know it's going to come quick," said Mesabi East Head Coach Steve Grams.

"We have high expectations this year, and we're going to keep those high expectations because I have a feeling we're going to do fantastic this year. The team is looking great, we're very strong so it's going to be a great year," said Mesabi East senior offensive lineman Evan Mattson.

They also have a brand new field to look forward to. Construction on the new field is already underway. It will be located at Mesabi Public Schools, and is expected to be completed before the end of the football season.

"We're so excited, we've been talking about it since two years ago really, when it was an idea. We were really excited and we're really looking forward to playing on it," said Mesabi East senior running back Cole Meyer.

Mesabi East will kickoff their season August 23 at 7 P.M. against Rush City. They will most likely need to take a week off later in the season or have shortened practices due to their early start.
