Iron Range Hockey Legend to Help Celebrate Greatest Day

Updated: February 13, 2020 09:12 PM

John Mayasich knows a thing or two about hockey. After all, he is an Olympic gold and silver medalist. And now, the Eveleth man will be the grand marshal at the Greatest Day Celebration coming up in St. Paul.

The celebration on the 22nd will mark the 40th anniversary of the Miracle on Ice victory. It's when Team USA beat Russia, getting them into the gold medal game against Finland.

He was coaching Bantams at that time in 1980. He said he learned the USA won after his own team's game. Then, he was there during that game against Finland, having flown out with his friend, Stanley Hubbard. "I saw Herbie afterwards. It was a miracle, the whole thing," he remembers.

The 86-year-old said he's seen some young players on the ice lately. He enjoys watching their skills. His advice to them? "Keep your head up!"

Instead of hockey, he now spends his days curling.

The Greatest Day Celebration is coming up on Saturday, February 22nd, in St. Paul.
