On Sunday, incoming Hermantown junior Zam Plante announced his commitment to play hockey for the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) on Twitter.

As a sophomore last season, Plante finished fourth in the state in points with 61. He led the team in goals with 29 and assists with 31, helping the Hawks to 19-2 overall record. That included a Section 7A title and trip to the Class A state tournament.

Zam will follow in the footsteps of his father Derek Plante, who is currently serving as an assistant coach for the Bulldog men's hockey team.

Derek skated for UMD from 1989-1993, then went on to coach for the team from 2010-2015, returning to Scott Sandelin's staff in 2020. He closed out his collegiate career with 219 points on 96 goals and 123 assists. Derek then skated in the NHL for eight seasons, and in 1999 won the Stanley Cup with the Dallas Stars.

Zam is currently skating in Europe for Team USA in the Hlinka-Gretzy Cup.

The under-18 pre-tournament began on Saturday with the official games beginning Monday. USA is set to drop the puck against Slovakia at 7pm central time.
