Duluth Marshall boys hockey head coach Brendan Flaherty confirmed with WDIO that he has resigned from his position. The decision comes after Flaherty took this past season off to recover from his battle with lung cancer.

Flaherty led the Hilltoppers for more than 20 seasons guiding the team to seven state tournament appearances.

He said the decision was not an easy one to make, but he could not guarantee a full recovery come this November when players report for the hockey season.

During the 2018-2019 season, Flaherty's assistant coach Bill Owens served on an interim basis.
