Duluth FC claims bragging rights over Superior City FC in first Twin Ports Cup

Duluth FC shut out Superior City FC 3-0 Wednesday in the first of the now annual Twin Ports Cup at Walt Hunting Stadium in Duluth. The derby-style friendly pits the Twin Ports’ top semi-professional soccer clubs against each other: Duluth FC (2024 NPSL Midwest Region Champions) and Superior City FC (UPSL 2024 Wisconsin Cup Champions).

“We have a team that’s very established. And now these guys are making waves in the UPSL. And it’s fun to have that in one place and play for a trophy,” John Shuster said, co-owner of Duluth FC. “I’ve heard that back in the UMD-UWS hockey days, those were the biggest games here when they used to play. So starting up something like that for the game of soccer, and hopefully it’s a long, long tradition.”

Alex Santamaria scored first for the BlueGreens off a corner kick from Caio Gomes in the first 2:30 minutes of the game. Joao Magalhaes added another Duluth FC goal less than 10 minutes later. Near the end of the first half Magalhaes put away his second of the night giving Duluth FC a 3-0 lead at halftime. That would prove to be the final score.

Duluth FC is back in action June 14 visiting the Minnesota Blizzard. Superior City FC next kicks off June 15 visiting Bateaux FC.
