Going undefeated in the regular season the Deer River football team capped things off with a trip to the Class A state quarterfinals. However a pair warriors aren't done yet, as Valarian 'JoJo' Thompson and Tait Kongsjord will each kickoff in postseason all-star games.
"I think it's pretty cool and a pretty big honor especially how few there are in the entire country and to represent my school and community," Thompson said. He's one of 60 players chosen from across the country, and the first-ever Warrior, selected to play in the Indigenous Bowl.
His now former teammate Kongsjord was named to the Minnesota Football Showcase. "It's nice to be able to strap up and put those pads on one last time," Kongsjord said. "I'm a senior this year so this will be the last time I put on the Deer River helmet and everything. It's just a little bit bittersweet but I'm looking forward to it."
The senior offensive lineman was one of 88 players named to the showcase.
"It's a big honor for us and for them, to have two kids one in the Indigenous Bowl and one on the All-State team, " Deer River head coach Brent Schimek added. "This is going to give them a great opportunity to get outside their bubble a little bit, see how the rest of the world does it."
Kongsjord will be joined at the 49th Minnesota Football Showcase by Cloquet offensive lineman Reese Turnbull. Kick-off is set for Saturday at 12pm at U.S. Bank Stadium. The Indigenous Bowl kicks off Sunday at 10am also at U.S. Bank Stadium.
