"It was great to start off the year in a good way," said Cloquet senior quarterback Tim Pokornowski a week after defeating Esko 55-20. "It's always fun to beat them."

"We came out and hit them in the mouth," said Cloquet senior running back Aahsan Maigag. "I feel like the way we run the ball, a lot of teams don't really want to stick it out with us as much."

In that game against Esko, the Lumberjacks rushed for 359 yards compared to 178 in the air. The following week which resulted in a 42-0 victory over Duluth Denfeld, they tallied 104 yards on the ground.

"Really I give it to the line. They create the holes for us to go through and they're a big help," said Pokornowski.

"We controlled the line of scrimmage. That was key for us and that will be something we try to emphasize this year. You know, just making sure we do the little things up front," added Head Coach Tom Lenarz.

Like every successful offense it starts up front, but it's important to note that there weren't many holes to fill within the backfield this year that's stacked with seniors.

"You know it's a special group when they have talent and they're going to work hard at it. They've really put a lot of time into this off season getting ready for this and now, it's just time to go out and play," added Lenarz.

Their hot start is highly credited to the return of a significant amount of athletes in key positions. It also adds a layer of confidence for their players, who know exactly where they want to end their season.

"I think it's time to go play at the bank this year. To get past that first game at state, and go check out the new stadium," said Maigag.
