The No. 8 ranked University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) women's hockey team scored three goals in the first period and held off Minnesota State-Mankato to shut out the Mavericks by a final score of 5-0.
Junior Taylor Anderson, redshirt junior Naomi Rogge and senior Anna Klein all scored in the opening 20 minutes. UMD followed up the first by adding a power play goal in each remaining period. Senior defenseman Ashton Bell scored in the second and Freshmen Clara Van Wieren made it a 5-0 game scored her first goal as a Bulldog in the third period.
Goaltender Emma Soderberg made 22 saves for her first collegiate shutout. Tonight marked the sixth start for the junior.
UMD (1-0) will close out their series against the Mavericks with a Saturday puck drop set for 3:07 P.M.
