UMD Wins In Frozen Four, Will Play UMass For NCAA Title Saturday

Buffalo, New York - The UMD Bulldogs have advanced to the NCAA Division I Men's Hockey Title Game after defeating Providence 4-1 in the NCAA Frozen Four Semifinals on Thursday at KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York. UMD will play in the NCAA Title Game for the third straight season and they'll have a chance to be the first team to win back-to-back championships since Denver did in 2004 and 2005.

The teams played at 4 p.m. central time.

The Bulldogs and Friars were scoreless in the first period, though it looked like UMD took the lead with 3:20 remaining in the period as Cole Koepke connected off a rebound from Mikey Anderson's shot. After a long review, it was overturned.

In the second period, Justin Richard would strike with 13:21 remaining, giving UMD a 1-0 lead.

But the Friars would tie it up on a power play goal from Josh Wilkins with 8:43 remaining.  The score was 1-1 after two periods.

In the third period, Billy Exell gave UMD the lead again, connecting with 9:53 to go.

UMD would lead 2-1. Dylan Samberg and Richards added empty-netters.

It was the 26th overall meeting between the Bulldogs and Friars and it was the fourth postseason meeting between the two programs. That series is now tied at 2. Overall, UMD leads 17-7-2.

UMD will face UMass in the championship game Saturday at 7 p.m.
