The 2021 Apostle Islands Sled Dog Race has been canceled.

It had been scheduled for Feb. 6-7, 2021. The Bayfield Chamber said it made the decision for the same reasons as the Apple Fest cancellation.

"With the main purpose of this event being to draw spectators, the safety of Bayfield area residents, employees and visitors is at risk during this COVID-19 pandemic," a press release said.

Bayfield's population is 487, and the Chamber says Bayfield County does not have an ICU and only has three ventilators.

"We cannot afford to gamble the health of our residents, employees, and visitors," they wrote.

There is usually a 10-dog, 80-mile race and a 6-dog, 60-mile race.

The Chamber instead encourages people to try mushing yourself through a Bayfield adventure company, nordic ski on their trails, or fat tire bike on the Bayfield peninsula.

The John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon still plans to hold a race, but there will be no spectators. It's set to start on Jan. 31, 2021. The Gunflint Mail Run is also still on sans spectators. That's on the calendar for Jan. 9, and it will be capped at 20 8-dog teams.
