The Wisconsin fishing opener is right around the corner. For anglers planning on on hitting the waters this Saturday, don't forget to purchase a fishing license.

Kids 15 and under fish for free, as well as anglers born before 1927 and active duty Wisconsin military residents. For those still in need of a license, a number of local bait shops have them for sale.

DNR service centers are still closed due to the pandemic, but Wisconsin has opened online sales through their website or Go Wild app.

"It's on your phone so it's legal to buy it on the app and then you'll have it on your app," said Wisconsin DNR region team supervisor Scott Toshner. "If a warden wants to come and contact you about your information, you can pull it up on the app and that makes you legal."

As well as getting a license, Toshner also recommends testing your motor and packing safety equipment ahead of your first trip onto the water.
