Chelsie Brown of Eyewitness Sports is along for the journey. Brown says that just before 6:00 p.m. Sunday evening is when mushers and the sled dog teams started arriving at the Sawbill checkpoint. This is about 70 miles into their trek up the North Shore and expected to finish Monday are the mid-distance racers. There is a large pool this year with about 30 mid-distance and back among the pack is Martha Schouweiler of Irma, Wisconsin. She is aiming for her fourth consecutive victory in the mid-distance race. The mid-distance teams still have about 40 miles to go before they reach the finish line, which is Trail Center on the Gunflint Trail and they are expected to arrive around 6 a.m. Monday morning.
