By a two-to-one margin in an advisory referendum, residents of the Town of Hayward have voted against a plan to take on debt to construct a new facility to house the town's departments.

The town says the initial vote count was 299 "no" votes and 149 "yes" votes.  The facility, which would be built at the town's current location at 15460W State Road 77E, could cost up to $5 million.

The ballot explained that a "no" vote indicated that the town board should consider alternatives that do not increase current debt service.  A statement posted on the town website said the town board will hold a special meeting to decide how to proceed.
