The program has typically received $300 million per year, but the 2020 budget plan that Trump's administration released in March included only $30 million for the initiative.  The president announced several weeks later, during a visit to Michigan, that he would fully fund the program.

The president reaffirmed on Twitter Monday that he supports the $300 million in funding.

Trump also announced that he would include additional funding for the Special Olympics and NASA.

The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative uses its funding remove toxic pollution, prevent algae blooms and species invasions, and restore wildlife habitat.

Governors of five states had warned the originally-proposed cut would cost jobs, hurt tourism and jeopardize public health.
