Rep. Jason Metsa has a full plate right now. The 3-term lawmaker from Virginia just started the legislative session in St. Paul, and has launched a run for the 8th District Congressional seat. Plus he's raising a 1-year-old son with his wife, Amanda.

"I know I'll be burning the candle at both ends," he admits.

Congressman Rick Nolan, who is retiring, did reach out to Metsa. "He called me and a few others after he announced his retirement. He wants a strong bench, and believes there's a lot of talent in the district."

So Metsa and his wife discussed it at length. He also met with democratic leaders. And the decision was, to go for it. "I ended up being in a position to really want to jump in, and make a difference in Washington."

He said he's committed to finishing the legislative session. And in fact, said that's what makes him unique in this field of candidates. "I feel that I bring a lot to the table in terms of legislative experience. I know how to pass bills in the majority and in the minority. And I can work across the aisle when I need to, and yet hold my ground when that's more appropriate."

As for what's next, he said he's looking forward to meeting voters across the district, and hearing what's important to them. "I'll continue to champion things that people want, like affordable health care and paid family and medical leave, and growing our agricultural opportunities."

Metsa is the latest to announce a run on the DFL side. Leah Phifer has been in for months. Michelle Lee, Kirsten Kennedy, and Joe Radinovich all have announced in the past month.

Republican Pete Stauber is also in the race, as is Independence party candidate Skip Sandman.
