Olson, who represents West Duluth's District 7B, was chosen by fellow DFL'ers to be Majority Whip.

"I’m grateful to my colleagues for entrusting me with this responsibility as together, we work to make sure all Minnesotans have the opportunity to succeed and thrive,” Rep. Olson said in a news release. “Everyone, in every community, deserves affordable and accessible health care, quality schools, and good jobs with fair pay and benefits. DFLers are committed to delivering on these, and I look forward to January when we can get started on this important work."

Democrats chose Rep. Melissa Hortman to be the next Speaker of the House. Hortman is an eighth term lawmaker from Brooklyn Park who engineered the House takeover.

They also chose Golden Valley Rep. Ryan Winkler as Majority Leader.

Democrats won the House majority in Tuesday's election by flipping 18 mostly suburban districts held by Republicans. It ends the GOP's four-year hold on the House and ushers in a new House Speaker.

Senate Republicans are still in control and stuck with Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka. Winona Republican Sen. Jeremy Miller will be Senate President.

The Legislative session begins Jan. 8.
