President Donald Trump says he has told his team to cancel the Florida portion of the Republican convention, saying "the timing for this event is not right."

Trump made the announcement during a press briefing Thursday afternoon.

Delegates will still gather in Charlotte, North Carolina, to renominate Trump. But public portions of the event that were to be held Aug. 24 to 27 in Jacksonville, Florida, will not happen.

Trump’s plans for a packed arena in Florida were thwarted by a resurgence in virus cases. The Republican National Committee announced last week that only delegates to the convention will be permitted to attend the first three nights of the event.

The president says he will still deliver a convention speech in a different form.
