Senate candidate Jason Lewis underwent emergency surgery for a severe internal hernia in Hibbing on Monday after experiencing abdominal pain.

Campaign manager Tom Szymanski said the surgery on Lewis, the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in Minnesota, was "successful and minimally invasive." Doctors had said the condition would have been life-threatening if it had not been treated quickly, according to an earlier statement.

The news came as Republicans gathered at Range Regional Airport for a rally featuring Vice President Mike Pence. Republican Party of Minnesota Chairwoman Jennifer Carnahan told the crowd that Lewis had undergone surgery at Fairview Range Medical Center in Hibbing.

Szymanski said doctors anticipate he will be released from the hospital in the next couple of days as long as recovery continues on a positive trajectory.

"On behalf of Jason and his wife Leigh, thank you for all the prayers and well wishes that have poured in from across the nation, and let me assure you that nothing will keep Jason Lewis sidelined in his fight to protect Minnesotans from the radical left’s assault on our police officers, economy and our Minnesota way of life," Szymanski said.

Carnahan said the party will work on Lewis' behalf until he is able to return to the campaign trail.

"Jason is the biggest fighter we know. He cares so much about Minnesota and has worked hard this entire campaign cycle," Carnahan said in an earlier news release.

Lewis was scheduled to appear at a campaign rally on Tuesday with Donald Trump, Junior. The campaign told KSTP-TV that the event will go on as planned without Lewis in attendance.
