The presumptive Democratic nominee announced his choice of Harris on Tuesday, six days before the Democratic National Convention begins in Milwaukee.

The choice makes Harris the first Black woman on major party presidential ticket. Harris is a U.S. Senator from California and former rival on the campaign trail.

"I need someone working alongside me who is smart, tough, and ready to lead. Kamala is that person," Biden said in announcing the decision.

"She's been a leader on criminal justice and marriage equality. And she has focused like a laser on the racial disparities as a result of the coronavirus," Biden said.

Harris serves on the Senate's Intelligence and Judiciary committees.  Biden said her role on the Intelligence committee has allowed her to deal "with the nation’s most sensitive threats."

The 55-year-old Harris was elected to the Senate in 2016 after serving as California’s attorney general.

One of Harris' standout moments of her presidential campaign came at the expense of Biden, when she slammed his past opposition to school busing. However, she withdrew from the campaign before any caucuses or primaries and later endorsed Biden.

President Donald Trump’s campaign is blasting Biden’s pick, calling Sen. Kamala Harris "phony." In a statement, Trump adviser Katrina Pierson says Harris "will abandon her own morals, as well as try to bury her record as a prosecutor, in order to appease the anti-police extremists controlling the Democrat Party."
