Ethan Schurman

WDIO Photojournalist

Ethan Schurman joined the WDIO team in June of 2024 as a hybrid photojournalist videographer.

He has always had in interest in storytelling from the stories seen on TV to the one’s other people would recount to him. With a passion for the digital arts and an appreciation for a variety of nerd-based knowledge, Ethan hopes to tell people’s stories and raise voices.

“My ever-striving goal as an artist is to share love and compassion through creation,” Ethan said.

Ethan came to Duluth from Moorhead. He finished his Bachelor’s degree of Narrative Digital Arts at the University of Minnesota-Duluth.

A digital artist, animator, & voice actor, Ethan will use these tools in his new hybrid role in the newsroom. His idea that each persons story is complex and he will bring this vivid drive to his storytelling.

While attending UMD, Ethan found the Motion and Media Across Disciplines lab. It was here that he started to nurture his skills and connections. He worked on projects to visualize newly discovered neurological conditions, created a TV pilot to showcase at the Catalyst Festival, and spearheaded the directing and creation of a motion capture project.

“D&D as well as the shows that I watch truly have shown me what I want to do. I am a storyteller, taking people’s thoughts and ideas, their lives and bringing them to light. To take those stories and present them is an incredible honor. With each story, I wish for the viewer to feel the connection,” he says.

Ethan is a deeply rooted nerd that finds enjoyment amongst friends and listening to the things people like to nerd out about. When he is not acting as the Dungeon Master for multiple groups, he can be found connecting to others and their stories over board games at local cafes.

Ethan says he is just a “pretty approachable chill dude” who likes to nerd out with people and tell stories.
