Mavrik Joos had been out ice fishing on the big lake on February 10th, before the ice broke off and stranded 26 others.

"My friend had class at UMD, so that's pretty much the reason we got off early," he told us. The 25-year-old YouTuber had even recorded a video for his channel, Mav, during the short trip.

When he heard the ice broke away and left fellow anglers adrift, he went back down to see if they were going to be OK. They were, but some of them lost a lot of gear.

So with the help of Marine General, StrikeMaster Auger, and his former employer, Thorne Bros., he replaced five ice houses and got $5000 worth of gift cards. And he surprised the anglers at their homes with the gear.

"I just know how hard it would be to lose the gear that you've been building up for so long. My YouTube Channel has been doing well, and it's nice to be able to support people within the community. It feels good to give back," he said.

He also dropped off gift cards to the Duluth Fire Department, who did a majority of the rescuing that day. And he made a $500 donation to the Alliance for the Great Lakes.

Joos recorded these interactions for a video for his channel. His focus on the page has been pushing himself in the great outdoors.

He's a UMD grad with a degree in marketing.
