It may have taken longer for our winter storm to reach the Northland, but when it did, it gave the Northland everything it had. Heavy snow and very strong winds hit the region.Winter Storm Warnings, Blizzard Warnings and Lakeshore Flood Warnings were issued. Many of these lasted through the weekend. Residents were asked to stay off the roads and wind and snow caused dangerous driving conditions.

The snow started rather light in the morning on Saturday but conditions started to deteriorate around the noon hour. The WDIO Storm Team followed the storm and by the afternoon, travel was nearly impossible. Portions of Canal Park were closed due to strong winds and waves, and Park Point was closed to non-residents. Around 11:30 p.m. Saturday, a portion of I-35, between Scanlon and Thompson Hill was closed due to drifting and low visibility. That section did not reopen until 10:00 a.m. Sunday. Relentless winds, with gust upwards of 50 mph caused whiteout conditions.

Light snow continued to fall on Sunday. Over a hundred churches across the region canceled Sunday service due to road conditions and snow and many schools made the early decision to cancel classes for Monday.
