The program is called Winter Rovers and it’s for kids ages three to seven. The playgroup includes nature activities, crafts, games, snacks, and story time led by staff from the Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve.

The playgroup offers a variety of themes like birds and snow. Thursday's group was learning about birds and was spreading bird seeds outside to feed birds and were also looking for ducks outside.

"It’s always healthy for kids to be outside as long as they’re safe. It’s good for them emotionally, it’s good for them physically, but this program in particular I really want kids to think of the winter as a great time to play outside,” Deanna Erickson, the education coordinator for the Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve, said.

The nature play focuses on science learning and exposes kids to the outdoors through fun activities.

It’s the first year the estuarine hosts a winter program. They usually run programs in the summer for kids. Winter Rovers is being hosted Thursdays and Saturdays. The dates are

Jan. 5 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Jan. 10 from 2 p.m. To 4 p.m.

Jan. 12 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

If you want to sign up your kids, call the Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve education coordinator at 715-399-4086
