Duluth Police have provided additional information about a stolen vehicle that was involved in a two-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon in West Duluth.

The 29-year-old man suffered severe, but non-life threatening injuries.

The other vehicle hit was driven by a 58-year-old man. Police say he suffered severe injuries and is expected to survive. A dog in the victims vehicle was also injured.

Charges are expected to be brought against the 29-year-old man.

Here are the sequence of events according to Duluth police:

10:28 AM Duluth Police responded to the report of a stolen vehicle in the area of 66th Ave W and Main St. This vehicle had been previously reported stolen in Superior on Thursday September 19, 2019 at 12:22AM.

10:39 AM Duluth Police Officer located the vehicle legally parked on the street in the 10 block of North 64th Ave W.  Upon locating the vehicle the officer contacted the owner to respond to the scene.

While waiting for the owner to respond, the officer interviewed neighbors about when the vehicle arrived and if they had any suspect information to share.  Neighbors stated that the vehicle had been parked in the location for several hours and had no suspect information.

The officer then interviewed the witness who reported seeing the vehicle earlier in the morning.  This witness described the suspect as wearing a green shirt. The witness stated he relayed this information to the registered owner at that time.

The Officer spoke to Superior Police Department about the status of the auto theft investigation.  Superior police authorized releasing vehicle back to the owner because they did not have a suspect.

The vehicle was examined for evidence and photographed by the officer on scene

11:36AM The owner arrived on scene.  The officer informed the owner that the vehicle was being released from police custody.  The owner told the officer that he did not have keys for the vehicle and would arrange for his own tow.

11:57AM The Officer released the recovered vehicle to the owner at the scene, completed the recovery report and cleared the scene.

1:16PM Duluth Police responded to a crash at 70th Ave W/Grand Av involving the recovered stolen vehicle.  During the investigation of the crash, Duluth Police learned that while the owner was waiting for his personal tow, the suspect got into the vehicle and drove away. The lawful owner then pursued the vehicle for several blocks prior to the crash.

The innocent victim and suspect injured in this crash remain hospitalized in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries.  The victim's dog injured in this crash is recovering at a local animal hospital.  This continues to be an active investigation by the Duluth Police Department.
