Hermantown Unveils Two New Fire Halls

Updated: July 18, 2019 05:39 PM

New and improved are words that can be used to describe two of three fire halls in Hermantown. City officials and volunteer firefighters celebrated the opening Thursday, in conjunction with the city's 36th annual SummerFest.

"The truth is that these important additions to our community are going to serve Hermantown for decades and add to the quality of our top-notch volunteer fire department," said John Mulder, Hermantown City Administrator.

Fire Hall #2 was built in 1963, and is located at the corner of Stebner Road and Morris Thomas Road. Fire Hall #3 is on the corner of Midway Road an Rose Road. Both locations held dedication ceremonies, complete with a ribbon cutting and open house for the community to see where the volunteer firefighters spend their time away from work and family.

"This was extremely needed," says Joe Tarnowski, the Assistant Volunteer Fire Chief. "The vehicles have gotten so much larger and more complicated as time goes on. Our demands for response and our demand for calls have increased tremendously. When I joined the fire department 32 years ago, we had 60 calls a year. Now, last year we had over 1,000 calls."

"These fire halls, along with the overall investment in our high-quality volunteer fire department, are great examples of how we take care of each other in Hermantown," says Joe Wicklund, Communications and Community Relations Manager for the city of Hermantown. "The beauty of a great volunteer fire department is that it truly is neighbors keeping neighbors safe."

The city's SummerFest runs Wednesday, July 17th and continues through Sunday, July 21st. It's a community-wide celebration with multiple events happening across the city. A full SummerFest schedule can be found at
