Virginia Police Officer Nick Grivna was recognized with the MPPOA Police Officer of the Year Honorable Mention Distinction.

Officer Grivna is described as a hero in his community of Virginia, who saved a civilian in a hostage situation last November.

A man, attempting to flee from police, grabbed a bystander, putting him in a headlock and using him as a shield, a knife in his other hand.

Officer Grivna ordered the man to drop the knife, and worked to de-escalate the situation. The suspect did not respond to de-escalation attempts.

As the man began swinging his knife more wildly toward the hostage, officer Grivna made the decision to act, shooting and killing the suspect.

The hostage was not injured. Officer Grivna was on standard administrative leave after the incident. A prosecutor later determined that Grivna acted in self-defense, and no charges were filed against him.

Grivna has been with the Virginia Police Department for nearly six years.

The MPPOA said Officer Grivna's quick thinking, bravery and compassion in a dangerous situation made him an MPPOA honoree this year.
