The high school will be called Rock Ridge. The school colors will be green, black and gray.

In May, Iron Range voters approved of the new joint school, which will offer more career-oriented options.

Cheers filled the Hippodome Arena as the historic reveal was made at the two schools’ rivalry hockey game.

Hailey Huismann and Ayla Troutwine of the Eveleth-Gilbert area said they really liked the new colors.

“We’re excited to combine with our friends in Virginia,” Huisman said. “When my parents were growing up, Eveleth and Gilbert  were combining and now since we’re growing up, Eveleth, Gilbert and Virginia are combining,” Troutwine added.

Mila Flatley and Brenna Tiedeman of the Virginia area said that they couldn’t wait for the reveal of the mascot, specifically.

“It’ll be really fun to see,” Flatley said.

This reveal will tie the two respective districts together for years to come, impacting present students and future generations alike.

“I think it’s fantastic that students and parents are coming together tonight, but this is about far more than a hockey game,” Noel Schmidt, Superintendent for Virginia School District said. “This is a testament to how schools and communities can bury their ancient war axes and come together to improve education for our kids and our grandkids.”

At the game, money was raised for the Marshall Bader family.

The high school is expected to be built off Highway 53 between Eveleth and Midway. There will be two new elementary schools as well.
