“This award highlights how we are able to continually support our student veterans and their families,” Monte Stewart, Veteran and Nontraditional Student Services Coordinator at UW-Superior said in a press release on Wednesday.

In the press release, the University of Wisconsin Superior said that part of the funding will support veterans and their families through the VNSC Emergency Fund, providing student veterans with financial assistance as extenuating circumstances occur.

“These additional funds are really helpful so that student veterans and their families are able to persist and be successful on their academic journey versus having to worry about paying a specific expense that unexpectedly popped up,” Stewart said.

The University of Wisconsin Superior said that funding will also be used to support annual events, such as, the Veterans Expo, Running for Our Heroes 5K, veteran-to-veteran mentoring programs and other veteran-tailored events.

“This funding is specifically designed to serve and assist veterans in our community,” Stewart said. “We are able to collaborate with Douglas County Veterans Service Office to co-host programs that bring the veteran community together. We also offer programs that support the needs of our veterans both on-campus and in the greater community.”

According to the University of Wisconsin Superior, this grant is part of $250,000 Governor Tony Evers and Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) Secretary Mary Kolar awarded to 13 registered nonprofit organizations that provide financial assistance or other services to Wisconsin veterans and their families.
