DULUTH - A nationwide shortage of day cares has been addressed at the local level. A new day care center in Duluth is now officially open.

The new spot for University Nursery School (UNS) is located in the Jefferson Square Apartments.

The St. Marie location previously closed. The reason for that was to move to this location.

UNS Executive Director Kathy Das says the Jefferson Square facility gives them a lot more space to work with.

A ceremonial ribbon cutting was held to formally open the new day care center. After that it was time for the kids to hit the jungle gym.

The facility can hold up to 172 kids. That breaks down to 48 infants, 55 toddlers, and 72 preschoolers.

There is one preschool room that is licensed for 72 children, two toddler rooms that can hold up to 55 kids combined, and three infant rooms that can hold 16 infants each.

Das has worked in child care for 50 years. She says this program is one she has dreamed of her whole life.

"This, for me, is the culmination of my career. It's a beautiful facility with beautiful equipment, and we have wonderful, wonderful staff, and I couldn't be happier," said Das.

Das says that caring for infants demands and costs more than caring for preschoolers.

"Financially, when you're (caring for) infants, infants are a losing proposition. You barely break even when you have to staff an infant program," said Das.

Das says she feels very fortunate that the Jefferson Square facility has the staff and the space to care for infants.

The Jefferson Square Facility technically opened last Wednesday.

Das says $80,000 went into the equipment with another $80,000 used for the remodeling.

Das says they are taking applications for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers right now.
