With Valentine's Day coming up, Duluth’s Union Gospel Mission is asking community members to be an act of kindness valentine to those in need.
The Union Gospel Mission hosted its annual Hungry Hearts food drive Sunday. Local Super One Foods locations help in the effort by selling $5 food donation bags filled with canned and nonperishable food items for customers to buy and donate to the cause.
Costumers were also able to drop off food donations to the Super One locations participating in the food drive.
"The need has increased and some of our shelves are almost bare in certain areas so this is what provides us with the items we need to make a hot nutritious meal," Susan Jordahl-Bubacz, a volunteer for the effort, said.
Back at the mission, volunteers were busy unloading the food donations and refilling the kitchen that helps feed those in need in the community.
The local gospel mission is the only soup kitchen in the area that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner Monday through Friday.
The Union Gospel Mission feeds 90,000 people annually.
