This event came together through the partnership between the UMD Athletics Department and the American Red Cross. Both of the women's hockey teams have given back to the community through the Red Cross this year.

"This is a great partnership between the UMD Athletics Department and the Red Cross that allows us to sort of recognize and shine a light on some of these young student athletes that do good things in the community," said Dan Williams, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Serving Northern Minnesota. "So in this case, the Eveleth 12U hockey team is doing a fantastic job helping the mission of the Red Cross."

Both teams have given back to local veterans by writing over 4,000 holiday cards as part of the Red Cross Holiday Mail for Heroes project. The players like to see how they're service to community is able to reach out to such a large area.

"We're all thinking about those vets and the Red Cross and this association," said McKenzie Revering, UMD Junior Defenseman. "It's just kind of cool to show that it's so much bigger than we really think it is."

The Eveleth 12U team will also sponsoring a blood drive with the Red Cross in the coming weeks in Eveleth.

"There's nothing better for energizing the work of the Red Cross than engaging with our young people," says Williams. "And we get so many ideas and energy from young people that it is really an opportunity for us to inspire other people to do good things in the community."
