UMD opened a U.S. Passport Facility on campus Monday for the public and campus community.

UMD now has a new option to make it smooth and easy for students and even community members to travel abroad with the passport facility located in the Kirby Plaza. People can apply for their passport and get their passport or visa photo taken for applications.

UMD’s study abroad program offers a variety of great options for students to travel and learn. However, some are hindered by the passport application process, especially if it's their first time.

"I never really had the opportunity to get one. Just because of the process of going through it online, you got to go get stuff and get all the resources. So with it being right here, it's almost going to be a lot easier for me to just get one," said Brock Anderson, a UMD student.

Applying for a passport usually requires the tedious task of going to multiple locations to get the application and passport photo taken.

With the passport facility on campus, they hope more and more students take advantage of this convenient location to get a passport.

"There is a real need for this and this will provide a great service and convenience to the UMD students who study abroad. We send about 300 students every year to do academic studies outside the United States," said Karl Markgraf, the director for UMD's International Programs & Services.

"I am a French minor here, so I'm trying to be talked into studying abroad," said Anderson.

Studying abroad is an opportunity of a lifetime that students like Kaylee Argo have taken advantage of.

"I went abroad to Birmingham, England last fall and it was the best experience of my life. I got to meet so many international friends from all over the world like Australia and Canada." said Argo.

UMD encourages students to study abroad avidly. They hope this passport facility inspires them to take action and discover new and exciting learning opportunities. They have over 30 study abroad programs and offer options to travel to 25 different countries.

"It certainly will help create awareness about the interest in studying abroad and the opportunities to study abroad. It will certainly make it more convenient for students who do not have a passport to take that first step toward becoming a global citizen," said Markgraf.

"It could like honestly change your life just by getting a passport so I think it's a really cool way just to like grow and have more opportunities," said Argo.

The UMD Passport Facility is located at 138 Kirby Plaza, 1208 Kirby Drive.

It's open by appointment Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Prices are below:
