UMD 'The Bark' student-led news organization receive eviction notice

Updated: July 28, 2020 06:29 PM

UMD students who are part of the university's student-run news organization "The Bark" said they recently received a eviction notice by the Kirby Student Center Administration.

Students said they are losing their office space in the Kirby Student Center in less than two weeks and have yet to be relocated due to limited space in Kirby. Editor-in-chief Heidi Stang said this took them by surprise because they weren't given a warning about this.

"We want student to hear their stories and know where they're coming from and know where they can go to get their stories told and so I think not only not giving us somewhere to go but also taking away a super visible place is what was really hard," said Stang.

Stang said they sent a letter to UMD vice chancellors asking for help in finding a new space and asking for involvement on decisions about 'The Bark' in the future.

A spokesperson for UMD said recently the Kirby Student Center leadership has granted The Bark's request to remain in their current space for the upcoming academic year or until alternative space is identified. Students were notified about the decision Tuesday afternoon.
