New minor at UMD focused on adaptive physical education

Every Wednesday morning, students from Lester Park elementary head over to UMD for some extra gym time.

The get one-on-one interaction with Bulldog instructors, students who are phy ed majors who've added a minor in Developmental Adapted Physical Education.

It's a new minor at UMD, lead by Dr. DH Lee. "Basically we empower students with disabilities and special needs through physical activity and movement," he said.

There is a big need for DAPE licensed teachers, since it is federally mandated.

Leigh Ann Viche, an adapted physical education teacher for Duluth schools, said, "For me, it's important to have students coming up. We're really struggling to fill these adapted spots, we need teachers all over the state of MN."
