ChaQuana McEntyre started Family Rise Together after being a child protection social worker. "Ultimately, our organization is about working with fathers, connecting them to services while supporting families and bringing families together," she explained.

She said she believes the child protection system is full of injustices for Black men.

So what she's been doing through Family Rise Together is opening up opportunities for people of color.

Recently, when we were there, she was working with two men who are facilitators in their father engagement work.

It's all really grown out of what started from the Leaders Growing Leaders program. It's a training that McEntyre brought in, to help young people ignite the fire in themselves.

Duluth native Deyona Kirk was one of the trainers. "I remember being in my 20s, and being the youngest at the table, the only Black woman at the table, and longing to see other women like me," she told us.

She said one of the challenges young people face is the technology gap. Which was made pretty clear when they were all trying to meet on Zoom. But they made it through!

Zooming in from Texas was the founder, Trenda Hackett, who enjoyed working with the group. "Just to see how the light bulbs go off, hearing things that they hadn't heard before, and how to apply it and see it in action," she said.

She told us it was a joy to see the group take the tools shared, and start learning more and growing their businesses and dreams. Dreams that hopefully involve Duluth and the Northland.

"These young leaders are definitely influential and have a big potential to make a big impact on their communities," Hackett added.

Like McEntyre. She's staying strong and seeing the improvements in how BIPOC peopel are treated. "I will say yes, because Duluth is listening and it starts with listening and changing the language," she said.
