The Duluth Fire Department says crews responded to a structure fire at a house on the 600 block of N. Central Ave. around 11:30 p.m. As they were heading to the scene, they were notified three people were trapped inside the house with visible fire on the main floor.

The department says personnel saw smoke coming from the eaves of the two-story structure when they arrived. Three occupants were awaiting rescue from a second floor window, while two others made it out of the house. Crews were able to remove the people from the house using a ladder. A cat and dog were rescued, too. No one was injured.

The fire was limited to the kitchen area and knocked down quickly. The occupants were able to return to their home after the fire. Initial damages are estimated at $40,000.

Fire companies from Gary, Lincoln Park, and Spirit Valley Fire Station responded to the incident. Duluth Police and an Ambulance from Mayo Clinic Ambulance were also assisted.

Authorities want to remind people to regularly practice exit drills at their residences.
