The Duluth Fire Department says it happened at an apartment on the 2500 block of West 2nd Street. The first crew on scene reported smoke coming from the windows of the apartment upstairs.

Personnel performed a search of the upstairs residence and confirmed everyone was outside. Authorities say the fire was contained to the stove area of the kitchen and extinguished. A secondary search confirmed everyone in the building had evacuated. The department says smoke detectors appeared to assist in warning occupants to evacuate.

There were three reported civilian injuries. One person was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries and the two others were treated on scene.

Total damages are estimated at $7,000. Authorities say they are investigating the cause of the fire.

Fire personnel from Lincoln Park, Downtown and Spirit Valley responded to the fire.
