The Islander: Coming of Age in the Apostle Islands

Bob Dahl knows his experience growing up is likely different than many others. He and his family lived on Sand Island, one of the Apostle Islands. "When I was a teenager, I realized that the life we were living out there on the island was somewhat unique," Dahl told us.

So he started writing down memories and stories. And those are now in a newly published book called The Islander: Coming of Age in the Apostle Islands.

It includes ten stories, nineteen recipes, five maps, and even a shopping list.

Dahl was born in 1942 into a Norwegian fishing family. He recalls certain holidays, school, and childhood adventures.

"My book is more like what a teenager might read, versus a history book," Dahl added. He now lives in Jacksonville, Florida, and is working on another book.

And it was good timing that the 50th anniversay of the Apostle Islands is this year.
