At the drop of a hat, firefighters are ready to hop on the truck and respond to an emergency. Thursday afternoon, the Superior Fire Department took an hour to welcome new members and look back at some successes.

Motor Pump Operator John Lundberg was honored with the Community Service Award.

Chief Scott Gordon commended him for organizing the department's Toys for Tots effort. Lundberg coordinated 40 volunteers, who made it possible for 570 children to receive 10 toys each.

Capt. Lindzi Campbell-Rorvick received a Life Saver Award. She was instrumental in saving a man's life last summer. Mark had a heart attack, and Capt. Cambell-Rorvick took over CPR from some bystanders when her crew arrived on scene.

"We transported the patient, and then we went back to the fire station and didn't really think much of it because unfortunately, part of our job is we don't get to see necessarily or hear about the other half of it," she said.

A few months later, Campbell-Rorvick was doing a fire inspection when she ran into Mark, the patient. He had survived the medical emergency, in part thanks to her life-saving actions. She said it was especially sweet because statistically speaking, a cardiac arrest patient's odds aren't good.

"So this is an extra blessing in that way and reminds us of like why we keep coming to work and doing what we do when we have a positive outcome and get to shake someone's hand," Capt. Campbell-Rorvick said.

Motor Pump Operator Jeff Baker and firefighter Nathan VanMeter also received Life Saver awards.

In addition, six firefighters were promoted:

  • Scott Gordon became the Fire Chief.
  • Camron Vollbrecht was promoted to Battalion Chief.
  • Robert Zimmerman was promoted to Battalion Chief.
  • Corey Larson was promoted to Motor Pump Operator.
  • Colton Lorenz was promoted to Motor Pump Operator.
  • John Melcher was promoted to Motor Pump Operator.

And six new firefighters were sworn in:

  • Austin Elliott
  • Blake Orton
  • Kevin Jones
  • Devin Shaw
  • David Rosa
  • Cameron Kalan
