A longtime Upper Midwest convenience store name has disappeared as a result of a corporate merger.

SuperAmerica stores are now known as Speedway.  The change comes after SuperAmerica owner Andeavor was sold to Speedway owner Marathon Petroleum in a deal that closed Oct. 1.

As a result of the change, Speedway's website says SuperAmerica gift cards and SA Points cards will no longer work.  The website says customers who have a balance on their SuperAmerica gift card can call customer service at 800-428-4016 and ask for a refund.

Instructions for transferring SA Points to a Speedy Rewards card can be found at www.speedway.com/acquisition/superamerica.

The Speedway chain is based in Ohio and, prior to the merger, had 2,740 stores in 22 eastern states, including Wisconsin.  SuperAmerica had about 170 corporate stores and 114 franchised locations in the Upper Midwest.

The chain has four stores in Duluth and one each in Superior, Hermantown, Floodwood, Cotton, and Grand Marais.

SuperAmerica began as a single store in St. Paul in 1960.  SuperAmerica and Speedway had been co-owned from 1998 to 2010 but retained their separate branding during that period.
