On Wednesday, Star of the North Maternity Home officially opened its doors to the community. The home has been in the works for 7 years.

Sue McClernon, the board chair for the facility, said this new place  will fill a need in the Northland. "We have worked with all the groups that help moms and babies in the area and they provide a lot of services already but one component we didn't have was the residence for them."

The maternity home is a 4-bed client residential facility. It will house women while pregnant and after they have their child.  Average stay will be 12 to 18 months.

"It is absolutely amazing," Kayla Rapp, a current mother at the facility said. "It is exactly what I needed. It was like a solid foundation and somewhere I could call home. The fact that they help you make goals and dreams and pursue them is a huge thing too and so it is a great blessing to be here."

Kayla is one of two women already staying at the facility. McClernon says interviews are being conducted to fill the remaining space.

The board says they hope the facility will go beyond providing basic human necessities like food and shelter.  "Our hope is to transform women's lives with education, holistic medical care and comprehensive services for mother and baby.  Whether a mother wants to keep her baby or explore adoption, Star of the North Maternity Home will be supporting all mothers to independence."
