The St. Louis County Rescue Squad is in its fifth consecutive year of over 400 calls.

Just the other day, they responded to the capsized canoe up in the BWCA. Captain Rick Slatten told us, "We average 7.6 water recoveries a year. We're already at six, which is a disturbing number to be at right now."

His main point is to wear your life jacket. "Don't have it strapped to the seat, or in a compartment. It turns a monumental tragedy, into a campfire story. It becomes, remember the night Johnny fell out of the boat? Instead of, remember Johnny, who fell out of the boat."

The annual fundraising campaign is underway. They are 100% volunteer. "And we depend 100% on the generosity of the public to do our job," Slatten said.
