Solar panels started a fire Wednesday afternoon at a Lincoln Park home.

It happened around 2 p.m. on the 2200 block of W 6th Street. Before firefighters got there, Duluth police officers helped a woman and her dog get out safely.

The Duluth Fire Department reports there was smoke outside the house when they arrived. They made sure no one else was in the home and found charred wood, dripping tar, and smoke in the attic.

When firefighters climbed to the roof, they saw solar panels had caused the fire. Minnesota Power came out to de-energize them.

Damage is estimated at $40,000.
