A final arrival for the 2021 shipping season, and it was the American Century.

She and her crew sailed into the icy waters of the Superior entry on Monday afternoon.

A small group of families and photographers welcomed her in, and were greeted with a salute from the captain. Brandon Jutz and his family were vacationing up in Two Harbors, and made a stop in Superior to see the arrival.

"My dad used to sail on the Great Lakes, and I used to repair boats. We're interested in everything that moves," he shared. His young son Connor loves the boats as well.

Five lakers including the American Century will be in the Northland for winter layup.

The Paul R. Tregurtha and the James R. Barker are at the Clure Public Marine Terminal. The Lee A. Tregurtha is already at Fraser Shipyards. The Burns Harbor is at the Hansen-Mueller dock in Superior. And the American Century is going to be at the Enbridge dock.

Final tonnage numbers are still being calculated, but the estimate was 34 million tons. The final load out was iron ore, aboard the Arthur M. Anderson.

The Duluth Seaway Port Authority is looking ahead to 2022.

Jayson Hron, Director of Marketing and Communication, said, "We're working with shipping container companies to make maritime container shipping in the port of Duluth-Superior a reality. What it could do to for retailers and the regional industries is provide a whole new avenue for them to ship goods, and avoid the coastal bottlenecks."

The Soo Locks reopen on March 25th.
