Firefighters have been working to extinguish the flames of a wildland fire in Sandy Township for several hours.

According to the Northland FireWire, the fire was reported around 12:15pm Saturday, and was almost contained as of around 7:00pm. It has burned 86 acres of land so far.

Several homes in the area were evacuated, but the Northland FireWire reports homes are no longer in danger because the wind has shifted direction.

The public has been asked to avoid the area as firefighters work.

US Forest Service and Pike-Sandy-Britt firefighters are on scene. They have brought in a helicopter to help fight the flames.

This is a developing story.
