Sadness for so many because of what happened at Robb Elementary School in Texas. Staff are checking in on the policies and procedures, as they consider the unthinkable happening here.

"Anytime there's violence in our schools, the whole educational community in our country is affected," shared Tim Rohweder, the principal at the Proctor High School.

He's also one of four certified ALICE trainers for the district. ALICE stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate, and students in Proctor and other districts have learned from it.

"It gives students the knowledge about the options when it comes to dealing with an intruder," he said.

Rohweder said he also knows the strengths and weaknesses of the buildings. And how to manage the five required lockdown drills.

"Our students do a lot of table top scenarios, going through options, from barricading rooms to practicing what you do when you're face to face with someone," he said.

Proctor notified their families with a message that said, in part,"School should and must be where students feel completely safe and secure. As an added precaution, we are working with our local law enforcement officials to have an increased police presence in and around our buildings for the rest of the week."

Leaders are already considering changes to security for next year.

Duluth schools sent a statement to families, and shared some resources about how to talk about violence. Here's a link: tips for parents and teachers. And another one: helping students in distress

Superintendent John Magas said they too use the ALICE Training, and that drills are common.

As for helping your student, he had this advice. "Make time to listen, and be open to conversations with our children. Over the course of the next days and weeks, look for signs of depressions and changes in behavior."

He said they also emphasize safety outside the classroom. For example, encouraging gun owners to make sure their weapons are safely stored.
